Zinc Rot, What is it?

We should start a new thread on the 727 mould. Speaking of zinc rot, out of my 433 models, I only have one that has some slight cracking on the wings..Gemini American 757-223 N602AN. Hopefully it won't get any worse. but I'm keeping an eye on it.
Not just the 727 mold, but all the classic molds that need to be redone. Including the short 9!

From what I understand, it usually starts showing up after 5 to 7 years. After 7 years, if it's not showing any signs of zinc rot, the model should be OK.
I see, most of my models were released in around 2005-2008 and the other 2 are newer releases so I assume they wont fall victim to zinc rot

Uh-oh… Both main landing gear doors on my AC Qantas Connie are showing cracking and paint peeling. It’s an older model so I doubt that anything will develop much further.

So i’ve had this model in storage for a while keeping an eye on it due me noticing paint cracking at the tail region a while back. I guess today it just snapped right off as I took the model out the box. Would this be zinc rot? I don’t see the model listen on the one article @YesterAirlines wrote and don’t recall anyone else having the issue.

Yes, that is zinc rot.

I have this model and it has zinc rot on the stabilizer also. Very unfortunate.

Sorry for your loss... It's the rot.

That is devastating... Yes, it indeed appears to be zinc rot.

A friend of mine received a Gemini Jets Thai A340-500 (HS-TLB, GJTHA590, Sep 2005) and he observed paint cracking around the tail joint in the fuselage and horizontal stabilizers. There were also some paint bubbles scattered across the model (likely unrelated). Not sure if the cracks are zinc rot; he’s also wanting to know if the A346 is susceptible to it too.

Looks like improper paint application. The outer paint. coat can crack without there being anything wrong with the zinc alloy used.

Unrelated, but same topic, many people say Magic 747s used to suffer from zinc rot, but it seems most issues were actually related to poor painting.

Disclaimer: I'm just killing time and don't really know what I'm talking about.
