NG Model April 2023 1:400 Release "Hints"

Crikey, some people out there must have pretty deep pockets if they can keep up with all these releases each month! It’s becoming like an avalanche which just keeps rolling over and getting bigger and bigger…I note that my pre-order for VR-HKK keeps getting further and further away, first February, then April, now May…losing track of it all.

Just the Saudia L-1011 and possibly the Qantas SP for me, but this might be adding further to the backlog. It’s getting like JC!

Exactly! I have some NGs pre-ordered since three months ago, and no signs of them yet. Seems like tons of models are being announced every month, but very few are actually hitting the stores. As you said, the problem seems to only get worse every month with every new massive announcement. I'm done pre-ordering, I will wait until they are in stock.

Edit: on the plus side, I hope when NG does come out with the classic 74 series, they start pumping put re-releases in the same way they are doing it with the 772.

That may be something to do with your retailer rather than NG.

I checked NGs website to see which models are delayed as I’m seeing a lot of criticism of NG for not getting releases out on time and I counted 24 models that are currently delayed. Whilst that’s not good, all of these models are from the FEB 23 and MAR 23 releases and nothing else is delayed beyond that. I would guess that the Chinese New Year is to blame for a lot of the delays and NG are factoring them into the production alongside the newly announced releases and I would agree with some people that perhaps focusing on getting out the delayed releases is more important than announcing new ones.

However, I would disagree with some peoples comparisons to the likes of JC Wings and aviation 400 as NGs delays are at most only 2 months and whilst its annoying, I think it is liveable and most people are fine with waiting an extra month for a release.

The fact is, NG are still making what a lot of collectors want from 1/400 and are continuing to invest and enrich the hobby. I just received the Tarom a318 and it is fantastic, I never thought I’d see another a318 mould in 1/400. There are going to be problems but NG on average are getting about 2/3s of their releases out on time and the ones that don’t are released in the following month which from a production view is quite good.

Well stated. I frankly feel these complaints are silly and waiting for a month or two more or some extra isn't a big deal for me. Considering the quality of what one is getting, I'm happy that NG take their time to deliver what they do. Comparing this to JC is plain hyperbole. Likewise I'm happy to wait for Av400 models with their quality and fineness. I'm not in this hobby for instant gratification. But to seek quality models. Not to show off or prove to others that "hey I got this first etc".
Also, ironically, human nature is that most people tend to be cynical and bully or are harsh and critical to those who excel or outperform mediocrity or listen and are empathetic. Imagine if NG started having the f***y** attitude of some other brands.

The thing is, the pre-order slot for the Saudia L-1011 at my preferred retailer is nearly sold out already (2 units remaining today) - although there may be a restock after that. So it's a pressure there to put the order in early so as not to miss out, but this order is based on the artwork only of course as the actual release pictures are even further away, and I know some prefer to wait for those before hitting the order button. In the USA you have the luxury of box-shifters such as Waffle who is like a model supermarket with big stock allocations - it's not quite the same thing here in the UK.

The Cathay L-1011 being a case in point, it's now also nearly sold out on pre-order at the same retailer on the 2nd allocation of 6 extra units, it's delayed until May now but there's still no actual photos of the product itself, which has been available to order since February. So if I waited for the release pictures to inform whether or not I wanted to buy this model, I'd be potentially missing out at my chosen retailer. It never used to be like this before as the release schedule was much tighter and the product photos closer to actual release. I only go for the certain retro L-1011 and SP's, they've not released a TU-154 I want yet, so there's very little out of the large pool of releases these days that I want, as the classic stuff is now a very small proportion of what NG are producing at the moment. The 747 classic could well alter this, when it appears.

I don't need instant gratification and I'm not that desparate that I can't wait patiently for a model - that's not the issue for me. I've just never been a fan of pre-ordering, where in some cases it has ended in disappointment, with the items not being supplied after a lengthy wait (this happened last year with the Delta L-1011s). However the current situation is resulting in an increasing need to do it, with quite a bit of my disposable income now having to be laid out in advance.

I guess that's Bedfords..... there were 5 left this am when i ordered the Saudia.....i think you have to take the plunge and pre-order this kind of model, as it's a lottery if the re-stock comes or not

This is interesting to know! I was actually wondering if it was possible to miss out on a pre-order. I have never been aware of pre-order slots here in the U.S. I know they do exist, but based on my experience, I was under the impression that most retailers will almost always ensure they get some extra examples of a given model on top of the pre-orders. I guess it is possible for a model to go from pre-order status to sold-out status at a retailer here in the U.S. but I have not seen that happen yet with any model I want. In fact, I want to say that all models that I have pre-ordered in the last year didn't really need to be pre-ordered, hence my decision to stay away from pre-orders. The only models that I have instantly missed out on are Aeroclassics, but they don't do pre-orders, so...

The main reason I don't like pre-orders is that I tend to lose track of what I have purchased, and I feel that for me it is easier to overspend if I get too carried away with the seemingly never-ending pre-order train. Also, and I'm sure this is not a problem unique to me, I am constantly running out of space, and I'm trying, as much as I can, to delay becoming one of those collectors with boxes and boxes of unopened models stored away (again, that is just me, and there is nothing absolutely wrong with those of collectors who are okay with storing huge amounts of models). And I feel pre-orders don't help with that cause.

Anyway, while I wait for models to hit the stores, the budget catches up a bit, and it also gives my head time to cool off and decide if I really want to get a model or not, after the excitement of the monthly announcement wears off.

That's all folks :)

Waffle will state which one should be pre ordered in order not to miss out. Like the TWA MD80.

That one certainly is becoming extinct pretty quickly! as expected. Still, there was some time to get it after the pre-orders. The Texan Airplane Store still has it listed in stock.

Yes it was Bedfordshire Diecast 😉👍 I was amazed to see only 2 remaining already this afternoon!

Good point.

But @Barison82 what L1011 from NG have you been disappointed at? The Delta yes delayed came out great, did it not?
The NG Delta L-1011s are fabulous 😉 Not disappointed with the models!

It was a pre-order for them which fell through, even though I got the order in early. So after a long wait, the retailer being unable to fulfill the order was a major let-down. By this time everywhere else had sold out - almost. I managed to secure the last one from another retailer and the other had to come from overseas, so it ended well but much more expensive. Not as bad as ebay though!

It’s an example of how pre-orders sometimes don’t work out, I’ve had it with a few others in the past as well.

I’m running out of space too which another problem, and this will come to a head very soon 😂😮✈️✈️✈!

Your experience in the USA shows how different things are with the retailer situation as compared to the UK. Here, AMS rely on another retailer who are actually importing the models to supply them, and in the case of the Delta L-1011 being such a hot model, got caught short and did not receive their full quota.

That’s the thing with so many pre-orders piling up on top, you can easily lose track of what you’ve purchased and it gets messy sticking to a monthly budget!

One retailer, ARD, do not take payment upfront for preorders and I like this approach - but they have gotten rather expensive for me.

With AC models, the trick there is to be absolutely on the game when they go live and then get in there quick to secure what you want. The regular, set release dates help and JetCollector (and AC Direct) limiting order qty. for certain pieces as they go live also helps. But, you have to be available to order at that early stage in most cases for some ‘grails, and I know how work/time difference etc. can all make this difficult.

It’s definitely a better thing to cool off and only spend the money on the models you really want, and not on others just for the sake of it 👍

I was thinking a fantasy 748 for the VH. NG has a track record of specifying 747SP, but that's curiously not the case this month.
They probably have changed that now that other variants will be coming. It’s been said the -8 will come in may and later in the summer other versions. At that point announcing 747s will fall in line with 777s and 787s announcements.

Well well, the boxes are starting to come out and the ones from this month (not the delayed ones) no longer have the silhouettes. Some of the backlogged ones still have them seeing ad those were probably made months ago, it seems like they're moving in the right direction.

Guys i mot sure if take the 777 Qatar cargo or not. Because seems that the grey it's more sand.... Seems really not the right color. What you think about it?
