Diesel Nine Arrivals

Another pair of new DC-9 additions are both PSA examples replacing the RetroJets examples I already own and joining a third Aeroclassics. PSA acquired a pair of new DC-9s in 1967/68 partly for use in a pilot training school agreement with Douglas, but this didn't work out well and PSA decided on 737s instead. Both had left the fleet by mid-1970. The DC-9 returned in the 1980s when they acquired 4 ex-Air Canada examples to facilitate expansion plans in 1983. All four would go on to USAir and two would survive long enough end their careers in 2001 with US Airways. The three models here are N982PS, N901AK and N708PS.

can you talk briefly on those 2-4 DC9s that ended up still flying deep into USAir/US Airways? at least the regs please!

With the right subject matter even some weak moulds can look ok. The Net Models DC-9 is one I usually avoid and of the 153 DC-9s I own this is the only one I know own using the mould, however the finish on this 2007 is superb and nobody else has made this scheme on the DC-9 in 400 scale. PH-MAN was delivered in July 1968 and named 'Karel de Grote'. She was sold to Hawaiian in November 1973 and in cargo config is still flying with Aeronaves TSM as XA-VFA - 57 years after delivery!!!

She also looks super alongside the 2016 Aeroclassics DC-8 PH-DCD in the same scheme:

Yeah no problem. Looks like they were N912VJ (formerly C-FTLK, N902AK, N706PS) and N913VJ (formerly C-FTLI, N901AK and N705PS). Looks like some US DC-9s got a partial repaint too although this is N928VJ:

i’ve seen 928VJ before, that’s the only one to get this hybrid. It also had a brief period with the “Shuttle” decals on the fuselage too. It would be really cool to get this unique bird in scale someday!

I agree with you on the well done subject matter rehabilitating a poor mould. I've got a Net Models TAA 'camel humps' DC-9-31 and I can actually look at it parked between various Aeroclassics offerings without wincing. Sure if you look closely you'll see the flaws but otherwise it works for me just fine. It also helps that this particular livery/airline combo has only been done just this once.

Still more DC-9s to add in to the collection. This pair are in DHL colours. N958AX was a DC-9-41 (a series 30 lengthened by 2m) that had originally been delivered to Toa Domestic as JA8440 in February 1978. She transitioned to the renamed Japan Air System in 1988 and was sold on to ABX Air in May 1996. She remained with them until she was withdrawn in December 2009.

Alongside N958AX I also picked up the DC-9-32 N909AX. This aircraft was delivered new to ONA in 1968 and flew with several airlines prior to joining Airborne Express in 1985. It seems she is still in service operating for DHL, but now with Aeronaves TSM of Mexico. Being a much later release than N958AX, N909AX is not as well finished, but they still make a nice pair.
