I didn't catch the control surfaces. I like the way they look, bet it's a nice wingview lol.
Perhaps it looks a little strange because it's a paintjob intended for much smaller airplanes- there is a lot of empty space that would not exist on that DC-3 for example.

How sad that they are using a 777 and no chrome finish. If they are using the flat gray they should have gone with a 787. the proportions might have looked better. i know its cost saving but its a big milestone for the comapny, Why not do it right?

I do agree that it would look better on a 787

From that rendering shared - it's pretty underwhelming - the excitement of an AA retro is undercut by the fact that it looks to be a very watered down and poorly envisioned and designed homage

Considering this livery is of historical significance and currently in a museum I don't see how it could be watered down. The only issue that would make sense is the fact that it won't be bare metal.

Technically it's not original for the Centennial either since they already have one on a 737..

Aside from likely missing the base color, which I agree is disappointing, how is the proposed livery “watered down” and “poorly envisioned”?

Looks like they hit all of the design elements to me including the orange control surfaces which should look very striking on the wings.

Let’s also remember that all they have released thus far is a rendering so I don’t think it’s quite fair to be extremely critical at this point.

Can’t disagree with that. The detail is impressive enough as it is; if it was watered down and poorly envisioned then it would be lacking a lot of the finer things that made the Flagship livery as iconic as it is. There’s a reason why planes like Flagship Knoxville and Flagship Detroit are cherished so much, after all…

The fact we’re getting a livery of this caliber on American’s current flagship aircraft is impressive as it is. It’s way better, plus of reality, than what was a Chrome retro 777 a couple years ago.

Those high density ex- PAL A350s make sense in their fleet. Can't wait to see that lovely livery on that aircraft!

Watered down because of the prospective execution, imo, of a livery that was intended for aircraft of very different scale and proportions - like @LeoMuse747 and I also exchanged earlier in this thread - with a caveat as I mentioned earlier, that we've yet to see the real thing - though the release image looks extremely cartoonish - which is not what I'd expect of a legacy airline like AA.

The 787-8 would have been perfectly suited for this homage - stubby, and proportional to the 40s-50s aircraft, with its retro-futurist nose design.

The 77W is a hulk - and perhaps a later scheme could have adorned it - like the Vignelli

Hopefully those A350s will fly to MCO. Still haven't gotten over them replacing a 747-400 service with an A330.
