1980's/1990's Gold Coast Airport

Since a lot of people are doing retro airports, I might as well jump on the Band Wagon as well.

This project has been in planning for the good part of a year, and I am finally starting to construct it. As Gold Coast Airport (formerly Coolangatta Airport) approaches its 90th Anniversary in 2026, I thought that I would create a version of OOL in 1:400 from the late 1970's onwards.

The airlines that will be featured include, Ansett Airlines of Australia , Trans Australia Airlines, East-West, East Coast, Oxley Airlines, Eastern Australia Airlines, Hazleton Airlines, Impulse, and more.

Since retro models made by the likes of Aeroclassics and even GJ are getting up to around $100 in Australia, I have decided to make all the models myself. That includes ordering the models off of Shapeways and creating decals.

If anyone has any information regarding the following two airlines which operated from OOL during the 1990's, please let me know.

1. Southern Airlines
2. Coast to Coast Airlines

Below is a really clear satellite image from the early 1980's of the area I am going to be doing.

Wow… I never knew OOL had been around for so long! This is a very exciting project, and I think I can help with the expensive model issue. Could you PM me a list of models that you are looking for? A friend of mine is leaving the hobby, and he might have some models that interest you.

Gold Coast is one of the older airports in the country

Good Morning all, thought I'd give an update of the 1/400 Scale Retro Gold Coast Project

The Retro Gold Coast Project has sort of been on the back-burner for a bit while I get models for the project, but I have been working on getting my hands on old schedules and timetables which has been quite easy thanks to sites like departedflights.com and timetableimages.com.

However, since finishing the board for the airport around a year ago, I have been working on a couple of new projects.

The first one is a fictional airport that has gone through many different iterations over the past 8 years and I feel finally has a design that I'm happy with. Its called North Queensland International Airport and is based off of Cairns Airport in Far North Queensland. I plan on uploading Airport Update of NQX on Youtube eventually.

The airport has 2 Terminals. Terminal 1 being the main terminal with 5 gates. And Terminal 2 is the airport's regional terminal.

NQX is served by the following airlines; Qantas, Virgin Australia, Jetstar, Ansett Australia, Bonza, Air Australia, Alliance Airlines, VietJet and Air Niugini (no Air Niugini models have been made so its just an Eastern 767).

I have used real historical schedules from Cairns Airport that date back to 1989 (Ansett). Most of the schedules are from 2004/2005 with the exception of Bonza, Air Niugini, Air Australia and VietJet. The only things left that I have to do with NQX is buildings, GSE and grass, which I'm just going to use green paint to save money.

The second project is a fictional version of Brisbane Airport with schedules from 2004/2005 for the majority of carriers, with Ansett's Schedule being a mix of 1989 and 1996. This one still has a fair bit of work to do including ground markings, buildings, GSE and Jetbridges (I need tonnes of them).

I look forward to eventually sharing these with you all very soon.
