The Future of Yesterday's Airlines

Hi Guys. As I hinted at in the last review post the past few weeks have been difficult for me. For a while it looked like it would be the end of the website and that may still happen. Rather than stay quiet about it I thought I'd keep you all informed and if anyone wants to contribute towards helping the website to survive in some form then donations to help fund the partial website migration are appreciated. Here's what's been going on:

just a quick search. does not for example this work?

No I literally said that tool does nothing in the blogpost! I have spent 2 weeks investigating this and working with professionals do you think you will find a better solution with a 'quick search'?

why not? your professionals can take $3000 just to run a tool that already exists for free
IT DOESN'T WORK! I did actually try it. There are a whole load of restrictions on it, which can't be met (for example the site can't be https) and it depends on site size. Plus if you actually did your homework you'd not find a single person who has actually used it and got a result. Most blogs suggest it is just a front for some Indians who will charge you to copy/paste.

the perfect responce to a person who was willing to contribute in keeping the site. now I dont care what happens with your site, good luck
I'm not begging. I'm informing. If people wish to contribute they can. What I don't need is 'advice' from people that assume I haven't done my due diligence, even though I literally explained the entire situation in detail already, and think they know better after 5 seconds using Google. So good luck to you too.

He would not be paying someone $3000 just to run a tool. Knowledge and time are difficult things to assign monetary value to.

You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that to transfer a website the size of Yesterday's Airlines to a new platform at minimal costs (manual copy-pasting everything) is going to be a task so monumental that it won't be worth it. A powerful tool, and people with expertise on the matter are needed to do it efficiently. Something tells me those things aren't cheap. You know what, this is the same thing Richard explained in the article 🙂.

Richard's response was harsh, but again, in the article, he explained how he had been looking for a solution for weeks and all the obstacles he had encountered. So you can't blame him for being annoyed at a comment like yours.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

We all know Richard can be an arse at times, but that doesn't take away from all the useful info on the hobby that Yesterday's Airlines holds. I personally think it is in the best interest of the community to keep Yesterday's Airlines alive. Even Richard's archenemies in the hobby have been caught complimenting the bulk of his work.

The math says that it will take about 50 collectors to donate the amount that they would spend on a narrowbody 1:400 model to help Richard cover the bulk of the cost of keeping the site alive.

People donate money for all kinds of things. In many cases, the money goes to some big organization, and nobody sees it again (well, I guess the president of the organization and those close to him might see it). As far as I am concerned, Richard can end up paying 1/2 of the cost and pocket the other £1500 to go on a cruise with his wife. Don't many content creators - of varying quality - make a living out of money that people throw at them via Patreon anyway?

This is the first time I've seen Richard actively asking for donations in more than 10 years, and after having put a massive amount of good quality content for our community. To me, he's also presented a good case for it.

Thanks chum and appreciate the English spelling of arse massively.

he did not mention any particular tool that he has tried. yeah, cool, he has spent 2 weeks with professionals, but it does not mean that they did not miss an obvious solution. He could just answered that had tried this tool and it does not work the way he need. did my question hurt his ego?

I said:

which is exactly the tool that page you sent linked to and talked about. So no your question didn't hurt my ego - it was just lazy and annoying

Your work is really important to this hobby imo. The amount of work you put into your reviews and blog posts generally is second to none from anyone else. It would be a huge bummer to see most or all of it gone. Nobody else in the scale model space comes close to the amount of (mostly) fair and very well done reviews. If there’s any way I or any of us on the forum can help outside of donations let me know :) I am personally willing to put in a few non paid hours if there’s something worthwhile possible for me to do. Good luck and I hope most can be saved!

Thank you and thanks for the donation too. Very much appreciated!

Your contribution was the first result on google? I hear playing in traffic is good for your health. You should go try it.
in your opinion I should have made a full scale research to start any conversation? My contribution might be to offer writing a script for free that would parce entire site and remake it on wordpress. to start with something need to know what has been already tried and yes asking about a thing what is the first result in search is part of it. But instead any constructive conversation Richard and you immediately start using passive aggression.
