Show Your Latest 1:400 Purchase (Shattered Dreams)

I understand everyone has their own tolerance to QC but I received my Gemini Jets Northwest Airlines 757-300 with a noticeable paint scratch across the main titles. For me it’s a glaring eyesore I can’t unsee unfortunately.

Honestly, this is extremely easy to miss by retailers. Maybe a black sharpie could do the trick here?

The issues with your Delta 753 are more difficult to miss though, those loose NLG had to be making noise as they bounced inside the cradle.

Missing tires can be easier to miss than one would think, I have found out…

I’m not upset about this one instance as I will have a replacement wheel to fix it and call it a day. Just the fact that it has taken me 3 attempts to get a model without issues is what has me bothered. I don’t blame the retailer either.

I figured since I’m on a role why stop now… My third replacement model for my Gemini Jets 757-300 missing a main gear wheel. Are ya’ll sure I’m just “unlucky”?

As I mentioned previously before. Retailer is messing with you. Subtle way to say "Hey go shop elsewhere and stop wasting my time with returns, even if the previous returns may have all been legit." Models don't just come with missing rubber tires

Well considering I used one retailer for 2 models and another for the 3rd. I can assure you that’s not the case since I have a good relationship with one of them.

And so I thought too. In any case, hopefully it's just a touch of bad luck. No one wants broken models, collector or retailer. While Gemini's molds are still lagging behind, their QC has improved somewhat over the past several months. Let's call it bad luck.

At this point I don’t believe I’m unlucky and will stick with that unless I can be proved otherwise. My tangible lived experience would indicate there are still issues.

I've had worse luck with NG this year. I guess no one is immune from the diecast airplane lottery.

Actually, they do. It is very common. They are also easy to miss.

Sometimes I do double inspections, once when the models arrive, and then again when I ship them. In one of these instances, I caught a missing tire on a model that I had already looked at once.

Panda is notorious for missing tires. Luckily, they are very good at providing replacements too.

This is an empirical observation, but I have been somewhat lucky with GJ 1/400 in terms of QC. They are not an outlier, unlike their factory-mate, JC, who definitely stands out.

Far from being my latest purchase, but it applies to this discussion. I can't believe I pulled that repair off. I wouldn't do it today 😴

What kind of airbrush do you use? Customizing/fixing models like this an area I want to get into eventually and i’m still learning how it all works. Working for a kitchen cabinet company helps learning the general process of it all, but learning the specific materials and techniques on a smaller scale is an entirely different thing lol.

Honestly, I just bought the cheapest bundle I found on Amazon years ago. Master Airbursh. It gets the job done, but I don't know any better, so...

I think it is always good to learn the skills with cheap equipment, then when you upgrade is like Wow! Poor skills + pro equipment = 💸. Poor skills + beginner equipment = 👨🏻‍🎓. Good skills + pro equipment = 🤩

This was the plan minus buying the airbrush kit itself. I’ve heard to at least spend ~100-150 or you’re just going to get a 💩 product. Still haven’t done a ton of research yet but good to know!

IIRC I paid 130ish for the airbrush and compressor. I can tell it is not a “good” product, but I have managed to make it work. I barely have time to do customs anymore, but if I ever get back at it I will likely upgrade.
