New 1:200 Collector – Focusing on Aircraft I’ve Flown (United Fleet) – Best Brands?

Hi everyone,

I’m new to collecting model airliners and looking to get started in 1:200 scale. My goal is to build a meaningful collection by only purchasing aircraft I’ve personally flown on (and ones I plan to fly in the future)—which will be primarily United aircraft.

With that in mind, I want to focus on the highest quality models available in terms of detail, accuracy, and overall finish rather than just quantity.

I’d really appreciate some guidance on a few things:

  • Which brands consistently produce the highest quality 1:200 models?
  • For United aircraft specifically, are there brands that tend to do them better than others?
  • Is it better to focus on new releases, or are older/discontinued models sometimes higher quality?
  • Are there certain molds, releases, or “eras” that collectors consider top-tier?

Since I’m planning to be selective and only pick up aircraft tied to my own travel, I’m hoping to make the “right” choice each time rather than upgrading later.

Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

There are two main players in 1:200 scale: JC Wings/GeminiJets and InFlight200.

In general, InFlight200 is known for having the worst molds of the two (especially their older molds like the 727s and 747s). JC Wings molds are better. However, this is, again, mainly true for 747s and 727s. For modern types, the gap closes dramatically, with InFlight200 producing some very nice models of current airliners, very comparable to JC Wings.

While JC Wings is generally known for having the better molds, they are also known for having terrible quality control. I can tell you that InFlight200 has been making a lot of improvements in their QC department, and it shows. Their current models are looking very sharp compared to older releases, and you are much more likely to receive a broken model from JC Wings than from InFlight200.

InFlight200 is a very expensive brand, just for the sake of being expensive. They do stuff like that, like making their models heavier and pricing them higher just to give an illusion of prestige.

JC Wings are very unlikely to release current United models by themselves, but will rather produce them for GeminiJets. While the molds are the same, Gemini releases might, in some cases, lack some small details, but the QC seems to be better for them.

I would use GeminiJets as the primary 1:200 source for current United stuff. With them, you get the nice JC molds, better pricing than InFlight200, and better QC than JC.

Minor players:

SQ Wings: These are enhanced JC molds. Quite nice, but an erratic release schedule and a current focus on types not flown by United, which doesn't matter anyway because they seem to steer clear of U.S. airlines.

Herpa: Generally not great, except some of the smaller types (turboprops), which might not fit your criteria anyway.

NG Models: Very good, I would choose them before GeminiJets and JC Wings if given the opportunity, but their 1/200 output is limited. This is a personal observation with NG: I think they intentionally over-saturate their colors a bit in order to highlight that sharp, neat look they are known for. Other brands also mess up colors, but I think GJ might be better in this area.

As for models of eras that collectors consider top-tier. It is a subjective question, but it is basically a supply and demand question. If the subject is popular and not many models are available, it will become rare, highly collectible, etc. I do not believe many current United models are hard to find in 1:200.

To get better advice on 1:200, you might want to consider going to DA.C (Diecast Aircraft Forum). Many experienced 1:200 collectors are active there.

There's currently a United 737-700 at stores by NG. I have one in stock, I believe.

I am assuming you are collecting current United mostly, @Aviate. Correct?
Thanks for the information on your other post. I made an account on the other forums and will start to read threads there too.

Im looking at primary CO-UA merger livery and newer evo blue. (2010's and newer)
