Damn, it’s hard to keep up with you guys. Anyway, this is a post based on some comments I read on page 4. Sorry if this was already discussed.
I don’t think age has to do with how detail oriented a collector is. I am fairly certain, however, that new collectors, regardless of age, are not very picky by virtue of ignorance. Many think GJ is the standard because it is the first brand they are exposed to and don’t know any better.
I have seen it many times, a collector looks wary at a no-name-box (usually Panda) and takes a GJ equivalent instead because it is a familiar brand (I have been guilty of this!). The only innovative Chinese brand that has somewhat of a global recognition is NG, and even then, it is not at the level of GJ. Heck, I think as of today Herpa is more well known than NG outside our community.
I think it is more circumstantial than intentional, but that’s how GJ does business. Their success is based on mainstream recognition rather than painstaking attention to detail.
Sometimes they make good models, many other there’s usually a better alternative available. But it doesn’t matter. They have the market and most people who buy models outside out community won’t loose any sleep over an antenna that’s .005 times larger than what it should, or the cockpit windows that are .04mm too low.
Now, with that premise, Connor should have known that the audience here at MAF can’t be fooled into thinking that GJ is the bomb, unless he was trying to promote them among new members here, which is fair, but difficult to do.
Regarding the endless battle of quality/precision vs. subject matter, I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that it probably shouldn’t be discussed. Some collector’s are in this hobby strictly in search of the perfect replica, others are here to satisfy their thirst for nostalgia, or looking for a diorama filler, many are somewhere in between. All have very valid reasons for buying the models they buy, and seldom we are all going to be on the same page,
