Bake’s Small Airport Projects - 1:400

Beginning to layout an extension to my fictional layout. This extension will add 3 standard gates and 5 hardstands for regionals. The middle standard gate will reach up to a 767-300 and the rest are all up to a 757 or A321/737 size. This brings the terminal up to a total of 5 regional gates (up to about a CRJ200/E145), 3 gates up to an A321/737, 3 more gates up to a 757, and one gate for up to a 767. Plus 3 additional Southwest stylized gates. Total of gates A1-A11 as i’m calling it, with A11 having an A11a-A11e for the regional gates.

This extension will nearly complete the airside of this terminal (Terminal A as I am officially calling it!) as all that will be left is one or two additional “southwest stylized” gates on the left hand side (A1/A2 as i’m calling them eventually).

Those two last gates will be on the next extension which will be two more similar sized boards below of this picture featuring mostly a very detailed land side of the terminal. I’m choosing to do this so I have flexibility over only setting up one board, all four, or any combination. The terminal will cover up most of the seams as only 3/4” of the building sits on these boards as you can also see in the photo.



The small white building in the middle will be a bump out on an eventual terminal building to add more interest to it. It has yet to be fully designed but I hope to grab inspiration from a handful of 2000s/2010s terminals around the US.

I have no clue when i’ll get around to this (probably after PHL is finished) but I don’t think I’ll stray too far from this layout. I have a Terminal B sketched out eventually too but that’s wayyyyy later down the line for me

and this is the best part! Technically these are mostly the standard US Airways gate markings of the 2000s (which is helpful for the majority of my collection) BUT they’re so simple enough but still “proper” that I can set up anything if I want to. A small Delta hub? Sure! A couple different airlines every few gates? Absolutely. The options are nearly endless on this board. The only thing I can’t show off is anything widebody that’s not a 767. Still brainstorming some ways I can display a handful all together on one smaller sized board.

I just hope I have the same colored paints for the concrete still kicking around or this will not go as planned

Don't worry too much about this! Mismatched patches on the ramp gives the whole thing some more realism!!!

Looking great, nice to see a US airways layout.

While normally it’s C130s landing on this runway, I needed a jet to show off the finished product and this was the first one I grabbed. Here it is! fully grassed and clear coated with the the stand hole for their model to fit into. I’m super happy with how this turned out and i’m super excited to make one to have for my own as this is an awesome way to display models.

The stand hole is very tight fitting so I have no doubts it’ll fail…once I gift it i’ll still suggest maybe glueing the stand into place for peace of mind however. The only thing I may edit before gifting is the hold shirt line…it’s just a yellow line right now but want to try printing the line design on paper and glueing it down flat and clear coating over that. That will come later on but something I just explore for the heavily detailed bits for future boards.

I’m becoming a little bummed that this is a gift but this gives me a ton of confidence towards my next project to make that one even better than this one. I’ll try and get a few good photos of some planes on this thing before it’s gone. Enjoy!

The Woodland Scenics “dust” style that gets sold in those “costco spice bottle” style container. I have a few different shades that I mix together for what’s needed at that moment!

It’s been a while!

While these photos aren’t new by any means, I wanted to show off a super old airport board I made back in 2018! It used the GJ terminal with my own hand painted ground markings. It uses similar materials to what I use now, just a bit simpler in terms of detail (no clear coat, now weathering, etc). I’m unsure how I managed to get all my ground markings so perfect and even (albeit not 100% realistic like I do now) but i’m impressed with my work from 7 or so years ago! Unfortunately this has since been painted over now but it’s a good way to see how far i’ve already come!


These first few photos were from an earlier version, the hardstands were different and the gate area didn’t have concrete lines or anything. It featured 7 gates, 1 true widebody and 1 up to a 767, the rest were all up to a 757. Hardstands could fit 3 narrowbody or a range or E170 sized with up to a 767 beside them.




This seems to be version 2, now with more concrete lines, gate marking changes, and new hard stand layout with a small commuter terminal. You’ll notice I added another gate using that double jet bridge that comes with the terminal, plus the regional area becomes a true regional area only for 3 E170 sized aircraft. The gate markings reflect AAs current gate markings, I assume I was emulating what was happening at PHL around the time of the merger.






More to come soon! I’ve been in a rut and life has been life-ing recently. I need to finish PHL and start some more fun projects here soon!

I hope so! All the new posts have made me remember this one and see if I had any photos of it. My oldest airport is still at my parents house (a big 4x8 sheet!!) and that one unfortunately was never finished. I hope to grab it someday when I have the space to show it off in all its ugly, beautiful glory!

You’ve come a long way! It’s still look’s amazing! What a collection you have! I totally recommend the old DCA 35X gates but with the U.S. Airways fleet. I’m thinking of my next project being DCA terminals B, C and D.

DCA gates 35X is on my list to do! I just need a specific board size as I want to include Terminal D with all the busses as well. I think it would be about 3x4ft roughly. Also at that point, I’d might as well make it one foot larger and include a section of runway 15 since it’s right there too…which just makes it larger and more daunting lol. On the eventual list but not near the top right now.

PHL is “almost done”
Fictional board expansion is next
Boston Terminal B is up there too
another PIT board (runway section maybe?)
DCA 35X

That’s my current list of projects i’ll be working on next subject to change
