Dayton Full Airport Update | December 25 Wednesday, 1985 _ 10:18 am

Min. Temperature -1 F° | Max. Temperature 10 F°

Active Runway: 24 L

20231225_184850.jpg
Before starting I want to take a moment to appreciate all the work that I have put in building the airport and I thank all the interested.
As you can see from the overview of the airport, we are packed of action with delayed and diverted flights.

20231225_185406.jpg
Starting the update from the left we got a Douglas dc 8 of Worldways Canada coming from Montreal for a charter flight, but due to weather problems in Chicago it got diverted.
Parked on the right side its another plane in the same situation, a Douglas dc10 of Canadian was enroute from Toronto to Chicago, also diverted due to low visibility and snow.

20231225_185419.jpg
At the Delta Airlines gate we got a special visitor, Dayton usually got dc8 fligths only Sunday, but due to high request a dc8 was scheduled for today flight, flight DL908 should take off at 10:35 am for his Atlanta rotation.
Behind the dc8 there is a Boeing 727-200 being pushed back 2 hours late for flight DL1308 to Cleveland. Also at the Delta terminal its a Comair Emb 120 going to Detroit as OH1533

20231225_185433.jpgAt the Usair Part of Councorse A a Trans Midwest Airlines metroliner its embarking passengers for flight 7T1926 to Columbus.
Also going to Columbus its the Dc9 of Usair on the back, that is getting cleaned before embarking the passengers for flight AL147.
While the Boeing 727 its going to Louisville as flight AL80.

20231225_185441.jpg
Usair flight AL661 its getting De-iced 20 minutes late before going to Pittsburg.
The first Piedmont plane its going to Dallas (PI22), while the Boeing 737 is going to Boston (PI431), passing on the taxiway behind its a Emery Worldwide dc8 going to Miami, due to high request during the holiday its not rare to find Emery Worldwide planes around the airprot during day.

20231225_185507.jpg
Flight PI153 its getting de-iced for his on time departure to Grand Rapids. The de-icing crews are working over time today, due to freezing temperatures.

PI 442 to Kalamazoo and PI418 to Evansville are at the gate getting serviced. (not pictured)

20231225_185524.jpg
Another Emery plane, this time going to Los Angeles

20231225_185532.jpg
At Councorse B things are quite quiet, with a TWA md80 going to Cincinnati (FW22) being 1 hour late. And a Boeing 727 on the classic rotation to chicago.

It's interesting that TWA seemed to serve completely different cities out of Dayton than from Indianapolis. From IND, they went to STL, MCI, JFK, and MSP.

If you go back a few years, you'd get TW22/189, an L10 that went LAX to DAY to IND and back to LAX. It carried both flight numbers on the DAY to IND leg. Later on, it went to CMH instead of DAY.

Twa had large part of councorse B at Dayton but I cant find much information on routes, cause for departed flights they had just a few destinations....

According to the detailed schedules link (Feb 1985) at the bottom, they had (in addition to STL and MCI) Detroit, Columbus, and Cincinnati. From Indy, they had (in addition to STL and MCI) Memphis, New York (JFK and LGA), and Washington National.

They had dropped MSP by 1985. The list of destinations I gave earlier is from the mid 70s.

Dayton Full Airport Update | 1987 (circa)

Active Runway: 24 L

This model airport update comes has i just received 11 new planes in 1:600 scale.

20240417_180851.jpg

20240417_180835.jpg
First at the North Concourse we got a Usair Boeing 737-300 going to Columbus.

20240417_180829.jpg
While a Boeing 727-200 is getting serviced for a flight to Philadelphia, on his left a Boeing 737-300 of Piedmont Airlines is going to Boston.
Behind them a Boeing 727-200 of Piedmont is leaving for a flight to Charlotte.

20240417_180820.jpg
At the other side of the terminal there are another 2 Boeing 727-200s of Piedmont, one is going to Newark and the other one to Tampa.

20240417_180757.jpg
Whit a better view at the MD80 we can also see a Comair EMB120 operated independently will be going to Columbus

If you do your ground layout in Inkscape instead, you can draw your pavement markings and grass textures and stuff right there and print it out at scale (after exporting to a .png raster file). I scaled mine so that it would print out in final scale size at 600 dpi. All of my markings are drawn to official FAA (airside) or MUTCD (landside) standards and are perfectly crisp and legible in 1:400. I would think that even at 1:600 you would still get good results for the markings.

20240622_122940.jpg
Despite one side of the concourse being almost empty the other side is full of action. Starting from the back coming forward we have:
A Piedmont Boeing 727-200 (PI432) going to South Bend
A Piedmont Boeing 737-300* (PI338) going to Willard Airport
A Piedmont Fokker 28* (PI502) going to Akron-Canton

I know it's 1:600... but man, that cockpit and nose striping on that TWA 722 is just dreadful! Were they all like that or did you just get unlucky and get hold of a bad one?

Work on the project continues

Screenshot (213).png

I've been working on retracing the ground marking of the cargo terminal for a bit now, the source material is basically insesistent and its very difficult to work it out so its no where accurate but I made sure to put as much effort as possible.

Screenshot (214).png

As you can see the source material comes from the satellite, if you go close enough you can make out some lines, but expecially the ones in the southwest part (near the terminal) are very very hard to make out.

Screenshot (215).png

This is the close up of the zone I made for today and that i plan on replicating. The brown square is the board size i got aviable (can still be moved to get the best part).
The yellow lines are the taxi lines or parking area markings, the blue lines are from the terminal, while the grey lines make out the concrete from the grass.
During the process of rebuilding the old lines I couldn't really understand the sense or find the main taxiway in all of the mess of lines and cracks of the old concrete.

Almost completed

Screenshot (218).png

A full project view, with all the taxi lines, roads and buildings.

Screenshot (219).png

Closeup of the part I finished today, it's very interesting and fun to search the satellite views to understand the function of the biggest cargo facility at the time of it's completement.

Screenshot (220).png

A pretty much complete top part.

Now I need to decide what part of the cargo terminal I should replicate in scale 1:600, I hope someone can help me decide the best part to show my fleet of cargo planes. Which is mainly composed by dc8s (the slightly inclined parkings can't accomodate dc8s and can fit the Boeing 727-200 as the biggest plane).
Since Emery Worlwide was the owner of the facility I will need to buy a few DC9s and 727-100s in 1:600 from shapeways to make some custom since schabak only made the Boeing 727-200 and the DC8-71 in Emery colors.
