Wright Field 1:400 Scale Classic US Airport

Hi All. Since I've moved back to the UK my model airports have had to take a bit of a backseat but I am trying to find the time to update them and get some more photos done. My Wright Field diorama now sits in what I call Terminal 2 of my setup and back in April I did get to take some shots of it.

It is loosely based on 1959 Atlanta. Here's an overview of it:

More shots from Wright Field. The gates on the East of the central pier are the home of a variety of trunk and local service airlines mostly using their classic propliners in this pre-1960 era.


Above: Mohawk flew Convairs like N1013C here on local service routes from Wright Field from early 1957. Note the jetpower Capital Viscount in the background.

Absolutely great detail one time saw a jfk airport form the 70s with similar detail. Someday I wish do make a model airport of yyc with similar detail to it.

The coming of pure jets changed aviation forever at Wright Field. In this mid-1960 shot both an Eastern and Delta DC-8 are parked at the new pier extension complete with the airport's first airbridges. This was very similar in structure to one built at Atlanta in 1959.





Eastern DC-8-21 N8602 pushes back from the gate in readiness for a trip to New York in July 1960. She had been delivered on January 22, 1960 and would be sold to Air Spain in April 1972.

I like this concept because it takes me to an era I'm not all that familiar with and to be honest wouldn't have all that much interest in. However it offers a great perspective of the wider range of models and how they can be portrayed on a model airport.

Loving the layout Rich! I've always liked the hodgepodge "build as we need it" setup. You've sucessfully tempted me into buying a DAL DC-8 and EAL DC-8, although the latter has no use for my SFO, there's no point in turning down another one of those iconic early jet liveries.
