One of the biggest releases ever? The story behind the 2021 release Delta CRJ-900, and its letdown.

On March 17th, 2021, GeminiJets announced their March 2021 Releases. This was during and right after the period of when GeminiJets was disliked by many for their quality control. But, many could argue that this month and the April announcements could have been what changed that reputation. This release contained the following in 1:400

- Southwest 737-700 N714CB “Classic Retro”
- Amerijet 767-300F N349CM
- Jet2Holidays 757-200 G-LSAN
- Frontier A321 N709FR “Steve the Eagle”
- Kalitta Air 727F N726CK
- SAS A321neo SE-DMO
- United Express CRJ-200 N246PS
- NATO A330 Voyager T-055

And of course, the Delta CRJ-900 N821SK

This model was so important, because the last time it was made was in 2008, 13 years before the release of 821SK. It was a Comair CRJ-900, registered N679CA.

By 2021, this model was selling for upwards of $100+, at the minimum. CM Aviation has a great video about that model and what it was selling for. People were begging for another release, and so when March of 2021 rolled around, people scrambled to get this model. Retailers limited people to only get 1-2, so some people ordered 10+, knowing they would only get 3-4.

N821SK sold out quickly, and another production run was made in April, along with the American CRJ-900, which sold out in 4 hours. By the time N821SK had reached collectors around the world, there were problems. Like, problems that, in my opinion, made the model unenjoyable. Now, I still love my model of it, it just has its issues.

First of all, the horizontal stabilizers are angled upward. It’s so bad on mine that I’ve been tempted to break them off and glue them in the right way. The gear are attached to the fuselage of the aircraft, and are in result, way too close to each other.
Here are some pictures of mine, in which I received in May of this year.image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg

In the end, most of these problems were fixed in the January 2024 rerelease. Also, my American CRJ-700 and my Air Wisconsin CRJ-200 have no problems, and look better in terms of the stabilizers and wheels.

So, was this model worth the hype?

In my opinion, as somebody who loves GeminiJets, no. If this model was the same quality as the 2024 release, it would be worth every penny. But, this was not the model people should have been expecting, judging that the 2008 release, even being 13 years older, had visibly, none do those issues.

I do not have the 2008 or 2024 release, so my opinion can be factually wrong. Thank you for reading, and I hope to make more of these short articles!

This is a great read, and as a DAL collector - I vehemently agree that this model was indeed a massive letdown - I'd call it a betrayal of sorts.
The recent Colours in Motion release is fabulous - that's the quality we'd wanted to see on this one.

Thank you so much! A little cool fact, my dad used to work for Delta from around 2006-2018 and he didn’t call it Deltaflot or Colors in Motion, him and I actually called in the beach blanket, and never really stopped calling it that.

Gemini seems to have been very hit or miss on certain productions of CRJ/ERJ models. I have a Delta CRJ900 (not this release you’re talking about) but I had two of the same main gear which made it sit at a huge bank angle. I’ve mentioned in another thread about this recent United Express E175 issues. It’s weird as some releases all seem near perfect. My Mesa house colors CRJ900 was damn near perfect, my AE E175s have all turned out near perfect minus the frustrating engine tilt towards the heavens.

Id rather them all be good or all be bad instead of playing russian roulette whether you’ll get a rare good model or a more than likely bad quality product for what we’re paying for these things. Nothing can be perfect but you can SEE these issues with your own eyes while assembling…I don’t understand how they still get pushed through to retailers in that condition. Long story short - great releases can be overshadowed by dog s*** quality control…and it’s a huge bummer

Totally agreed. My best Gemini model in terms of mould and printing (my opinion) is the 1:200 United Express E175 from 2018. Concerning considering that that model is 7 years old. I’ll have to see how this new 200 scale 175 turns out.

Pretty inexcusable, that release was handled about as bad as it possible could've been - retailer friends telling me about how Gemini cancelled orders they made for it, sending the wrong number of units, ect. Not to mention it was terrible in terms of QC. Takes a lot of 1:400 tech ops to make it look normal (fixing the stabs, and landing gear). I have both of the pre 2010 Delta CRJ releases, and they're perfectly normal. Not to mention this release is where Gemini introduced that awful glittery greenbrown puke shade for the original Southwest livery and its subsequent retro adaptations

I feel like there would be a similar reaction to this model if a company decided to produce a QantasLink Q400 in the 2016 livery. The whole fleet has been painted in the 2016 livery for years now with even more coming, and only 1:200 scale models have been made of them.

The thing is this was one of a number of releases that were made for Gemini with massive QC issues around that time or in the years after: Two other examples are the:

Aer Lingus ATR 72 EI-GPP in September 2022

and the National 727 with hushkits also in 2022

Now you could forgive these as honest mistakes (and this was during the Covid period) but I have been told by sources very much in the know that these issues were A) known about when the models were sent out and B) Gemini got a full refund for these models and still chose to release them on to the market without them being fixed (The 727 could have presumably been so).

Pretty sh*tty treatment of your customers frankly.

I have a JC ATR, it’s not bad, the front gear has issues though.

I laughed so hard when I first saw that ATR 72, just how do you mess up so badly :ROFLMAO:
