Model of the Year 2025

As 2025 is coming to an end within a few hours - it is also a good time to look back to the best models released this year. I couldn't join the thread Model of the Year 2024 arranged by @abdulmohiuddin but I will try to makeup by creating the thread this year. Unlike 2023 which the Cathay Pacific L-1011 Lettuce Green tops out the list for the best release made that year, I don’t have a specific one for 2025 (and hopefully things will change next year). Instead I choose the best models made this year from each manufacturer, which I own at least 4 models made in 2025. This means AV400 and JC are disqualified as I own 3 and 2 models respectively. Despite being legacy large manufacturer, I do not have any 2025-release from
GJ or AC, particularly due to the unmatched release scope to my collecting scope. Rising price is also a big drawback making models from those brand unappealing to me. To be fair, AC release choice is rather unique as well. A side note is that roughly 35% of the models being inducted into my collection was made this year as some older releases are nice to add. Without further ado, let’s get into each brand and their top releases.

Starting with NG - a brand which accounts for 1/3 of the total models released in 2025 coming into my collection. I am grateful that the brand offers the CRP (Collector Reward Program), in which I could source half of these models released this year there. Spoiler’s alert: the PSA L-1011 could had won this title for the chromed livery and underbelly failing - but the packaging cradle design failed to protect the exhaust prong of the tail-mount RB211s. That leaves the Northrop Grumman Lockheed L-1011-100 N140SC “Stargazer” with the old title to hold the crown for NG’s best release - a model features underbelly rocket mount with a modelled rocket. Kudos to NG for trying their best to replicate this beautiful airframe. Hopefully in 2026 we can see the updated current title release of the only active Tristar at the moment.

Slightly less than 1/3 of 2025-released models in my collection comes from PHX. The brand release spectrum is wide geographically - from South American A332 to African latest Dreamliner operator. A new mould is also introduced - the IL-62 with both original variant with NK-8 and improved M version with D-30. However to me, their best release of the year goes to Russian Air Force Ilyushin IL96-400VVIP RA-96102 - an airframe that was converted from the original cargo layout into passenger-carrying. This airframe is also distinctive by an array of antennas and special communication equipment, which requires a mould modification for it. I am glad that PHX takes one step further to make the model as realistic as one could for the scale. Like other manufacturers, they might not produce 100%-flawless models but good enough representation.

2025 is a year that PM was busy as an OEM producing models for other brands. I got 5 out of 31 releases they made for themselves and all of them are good. My take on PM’s strength is their antennas - so delicate and well-sized. Their moulds are almost flawless but I would wish they use all of their mould in the catalouge more often. In the respect, the Bahrain Royal Flight Boeing 767-4SF/ER A9C-HMH stood out. The model was initially available exclusively at a trade fair but soon made its way across the world.
IMG_5814.jpeg

HX/YY has had a busy year with a big jump in the number of releases (indeed due to multiple versions made for one model). The MachBirdz release is so far the most interesting - Qantas Boeing 747-438 VH-OJS with 5th pod, which I have featured in a photoshoot thread. The FD version made the model even more stunning. My only small critic is the choice of the stand for this model, which is the plastic ones found on YY's product. It would have been nicer had the regular metal HX stand comes with it.
IMG_5785.jpeg

PT - Patriot deserves their own attention despite not being a “regular” manufacturer in 1:400 with their own mould - that will change soon as they introduce the An-12. So far they have heavily customized models made by HX or PM for their releases, with i.e: extra fuel boom in IIAF releases or Space Shuttle. However their latest available model - U.S Army (operated by Boeing) Boeing 767-200 N767BA AOA - Airborne Optical Adjunct is to me the most interesting with the large blister on top of the fuselage and two fins below it. A dedicated photoshoot thread would be available soon.

It would be interesting that you could all share:
- Your favorite 2025 release
- Your favorite purchase of the year (for which could be models made in any year).

As 2026 is nearby (or already is now), I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year and may 2026 a year full of interesting releases.

I had quite the busy 2025 in collecting, and I also found some nice gems this year.

My Top 5 of 2025

5. 3D Design Deck NetJets Bombardier Challenger 600 N234QS
3D printing has a very bright future in this hobby. Most of us probably have 3D-printed GSE, terminals, etc. 3D Design Deck stormed onto the scene within the past couple of years and their NetJets Challenger release from late 2024 really got me looking into this brand more. There’s been some phenomenal releases from 3DD in 2025, so I’ll be excited to see what they’ve got in 2026.
IMG_5293.jpeg

4. Aviation400 Philippine Airlines Airbus A350-900 RP-C3501
If you don’t have Aviation400 in your “Best Models of 2025” list, you’re either lying, or you didn’t get an AV400 — no exceptions. Anyways this was my first foray into Philippine Airlines, which I’ve developed a soft spot for due to their rich history. AV400 has become one of my top brands since they get the finer details nailed down, and the detachable gears, while maybe gimmicky to some, are done well.

3. Gemini Jets United Airlines Boeing 777-200ER N798UA
Gemini may not have the strongest hard product in the industry, but it’s hard to deny that when they do something good, they can be on par with their competitors. This United 777 is a solid example of such, and ranks high on this list for sentiment rather than pure quality, as I flew one of these this past summer as my first widebody flight.

2. Aeroclassics Delta Air Lines Douglas DC-10-10 N602DA
Aeroclassics found their stride in 2025 by rereleasing some impossible-to-find models, including a Delta DC-10. These typically have asking prices of well over $150, so getting a new release at retail price moments before they sold out was such a treat. I also got this the same day my first white whale showed up.
IMG_5296.jpeg

1. Aviation400 All Nippon (ANA) Airbus A380 JA381A Flying Honu
My favorite model of 2025 has to be the Flying Honu A380 from AV400. I think some of y’all were expecting AV400 to top a list like this 😆 I’m really happy that we have some sort of special livery on the Superjumbo, so finally getting one of these was such a great feeling. If I ever go to Honolulu or Tokyo and see the other colors, I’ll be delighted to add those as well when/if I can find them!

I thought a little bit about which model is going to be model of the year fror me and ended up settling the Emirates standard livery (new and old) A380s by Aviation400. Sure, there is no shortage of Emirates A380s in the scale but how many are on moulds as good as Aviation400's ? Some of the other models I considered for my model of the year are: the Phoenix Air France 777-300ER in the pre-2009 Barcode livery, the HX Pan Am 747-100, the NG models House livery 747SPs, the NG models Starlux A350-1000 and the Phoenix Air Canada 787-8 among (many) others . I mention those for various reasons: subject matter, quality and most importantly how much I enjoy them.
I'm looking forward to 2026, especially considering the possible release of the model of an aircraft (same type, same airline, same livery, same registration) I flew on. I do have models of aircraft I have seen or been inside but I never owned a model of an aircraft I flew on.

This was my first full calendar year of heavily collecting, bringing many good options for model of the year but it was mostly a year of “catching up” and grabbing a bunch of older releases when possible.

My favorite model released this year has got to be the NG PSA L1011-1. I mean…look at it!

IMG_6037.jpeg

My person favorite that I acquired during this year has to be the GeminiJets MetroJet 737-200 Sample (1 of 6 made!). Such a rare model that brings me great joy in my collection. I can’t wait to break it out for photos again soon. It ain’t perfect but she’s mine🤣

For me the model of the year has to be HX nalanjii dreaming, the mould is great like many other HX models but the detail on the livery is like no other model I own

Agreed. I was fighting myself a lot for HX’s crown but the 5th pod is truly on a league of its own.

Very interesting choices and I agreed all with your comments. Had I got the Turtle Superjumbo it would be at the same place.

These are all really solid choices and several are adjacent to (but not the same as) models in my top 15 list. I'm just pulling together the material for the video now!

I look forward to your top 15 list.

Interesting choice and I agreed. I also got myself an EK A380 with the nee livery but it arrived with a broken wingtip - heartbroken for me.

I really really liked the PSA L-1011 to be on top of my list - but that broken piece vanished in thin air.

On paper it should be NG’s Singapore A350, but I haven’t opened mine yet so in reality…

Panda’s Garuda MD-11. A solid little model with impeccable details and build quality. It’s a 1:200 in all but size, which is what the best 1:400s should strive to be these days. This also being a retailer exclusive makes me proud to own one.
IMG_8931.jpeg

As a bonus, I’ll slap NG’s KAL 748 with “biggest wasted opportunity.” Would’ve been model of the century if the engine logos had been one fucking millimeter lower. One.

Peak Gemini was when they had their monopoly and when their quality was great for the time, especially 1:200. Catch up is the only was to collect quality Gemini.

2025 has been a great year, and I will definitely say I had my fun collecting with some of the new releases we've had. I will list a couple of standout models released in this year(For the sake of ease, I will consider models that made it to market in 2025 as 2025 releases)

Model Highlights of 2025
1) Pan Am 747-100 N747PA "Juan T. Trippe" by HX Models:
1000013563 (1).jpg
2025 saw HX Models really start releasing 747 Classics. HX would annouce a set of five Pan Am 747-100's, four of which in the 1970's delivery scheme, and one in the 1984 Bill Board scheme. Given that the last Pan Am 747's were released almost a decade prior by Gemini Jets, Pan Am 747's were scarcely found on the market within reason. A Pan Am 747 is a holy grail to me, and for that I would like to say that this, and the other variants HX released are definitely Model of the Year contenders!

2) Northrop Grumman L-1011-1 N140SC "StarGazer" NG Models:
20250929_202439.jpg
A testament to the strength of the NG L-1011 mould, it has consistently been some of the finest models ever produced in this scale. Mated with the Pegasus rocket, NG have made an impressive model even more so, worthy of representing the final flying TriStar.

3) Emirates A380-800 A6-EVS "Last A380" AV400:
20250630_165532.jpg
Perhaps not the most unique subject, Emirates A380's have been commonplace in this scale owing to Gemini Jets relationship with Emirates. However, the Gemini A380 mould has its limits, so when AV400 released it under the radar on their class leading A380 mould, I was compelled to purchase it. What Emirates is to the A380 is what Pan Am was to the 747.

Honorable Mentions:
Kuwait Airways 727-200 and Air Algerie 727-200 by Aeroclassics:
20251123_024409.jpg
I remember bashing the Aeroclassics 727-200 mould last year, I will admit I was too rash in saying such and that these releases from October 2025 are gems, ones that I would recommend buying.

Iberia MD-88 EC-FOZ NG Models:
20250314_063122.jpg
NG's underused MD-80 mould, wonderful little model but suffers from its engines being mounted at an angle, making the titles on the engine too high.

Phoenix Il-62 Mould:
20251230_161908.jpg
20250929_203215.jpg
Phoenix Models came out with its Il-62 mould, modeling both a Il-62 and the IL-62M. Given the limited nature of the Gemini Il-62's, this was well needed, and perhaps my favorite new mould of 2025. I look forward to seeing more releases with this!

AV400 Updated A350 Mould:20250404_165853(0).jpg
AV400 updated its A350 mould to include removable landing gear. The long gestation period was worth it, my personal highlight is the Aeroflot A350-900 RA-73154!

With 2026 upcoming, I look forward to seeing what new developments come in the scale, hopefully seeing more classic models released! I wish you all the best for 2026!
