Matchbox - Some Childhood Gems

A couple months ago I came home to my parents and we had been going through my box of airplane toys. It contains everything from matchbox planes to larger plastic replicas with bombs and landing gear, or any other airplane toy that could be beaten and battered by a boy growing up. There were always a few favorites and standouts and many changed over the years. I decided to take a few back home with me and have on the shelf. Today I show some of them off to you all.

Do any of you have any childhood models, toys, matchbox planes, or anything similar that’s lasted through the years?

Matchbox Continental 777-200 from 2005


Matchbox American Airlines DC-10 from 2000


Matchbox American Airlines 737-800 from 2007


Matchbox “D.A.R.E” MD-80 from 2000


Maisto 747(-200?), not sure on the year but early 2000s i’m guessing.



really not a bad mould all things considered.



Also in the haul was this F4 and F15. It’s a different brand but not 100% sure. These things were great.



Everything together…to the shelves they live! I’m sure without these and the many others I had, I wouldn’t be collecting 400 scale models today.

I had lots of these Matchbox Skybusters when I was a kid, before finally moving to Herpa 1:500 models in 2007.
I remember having some of your models (Continental 777, American DC-10 and the DARE MD-90), but also some others:

- a business jet similar to a Citation X
- A Cessna Caravan amphibian in "Grizzly" scheme (this one)
- An F-16 in USAF Thunderbirds scheme (this one)
- British Airways B777-200
- B747-400 in a white and black Matchbox "MBX Airlines" livery (or something like that)

I think I also had a FedEx A300 when I was a kid, but that's a very vague memory because I was around 4 years old when I had it for the other models above, I was a bit older, around 10 years of age

The caravan I had a few different liveries including that same grizzly scheme, same goes for the citation X and a few others. If child me didn’t beat them to hell there would be so many little gems. My favorites always got the worst beating…naturally
