With a pencil. For each model I copy the real weathering present on the real registration by inspiring from pictures of each specific regs from Jetphotos, planespotters, airliners, youtube (especially wing view), etc.

What do you mean by long term? I’ve been adding weathering on my models for 4 years and it’s still perfectly fine! It’s only pencil and, if I want to remove it, I can and the model is brand new again, but this adds a lot of realism and makes the models look like real aircrafts with only a pencil and some technique
