HX Models - News & Discussion

A small detail HX moulded into their MD-11 wing is the PIP (performance improvement) extended flap fairing, has this ever been done in 400 scale on any other mould before? Just noticed now and quite intrigued🤔
Saw this at the Aviation Megastore last monday when I came to pick up those KLM MD-11s... Had to get a LH Cargo MD-11 because of this because geesh these MD-11s are hot stuff

What do you think about the color blue on the KLM MD-11? Just received mine and by itself it looks beautiful but compared to the NG and Phoenix color blue it's quite different.

Truthfully, it is wrong.
And I hate to say that, because if it was more like JC/NG then the models would truly be the best KLM models ever made...

GJ also often struggles with the KLM blue, but they usually end up (way) too light which makes the models look extremely bad.
YY has done the opposite and ended up with a darker almost purple-ish look which, while definitely wrong, at least does still look very nice.

Let me show you what I mean:

On the left is the latest PX release, which for some reason went down the GJ road and is way too light. Normally PX is decently on point.
Top is the JC release, right is an NG release and bottom is the new YY MD-11.
I have a skin piece of an actual KLM MD-11, and the JC and NG are easily the closest with the JC maybe having a tiny edge over the NG.

This is what it looks like on my KLM MD-11 shelf after adding the YYs:

Note all four YY KLM MD-11s are here, two in the middle and two on the stands. Compare the colour to the GJ MD-11 top left and the JC MD-11 bottom right. It's visible but it doesn't throw me off too much personally.

What I think happened is that YY based their colour off the night time shots that were made of the KLM MD-11s right before retirement:

I decided to replace my older JC release as I do like the colour blue YY went with, even if wrong, and it's just not a contest on other areas.
Here's some pictures comparing the YY release with the JC one:

So as always with collecting, no model is perfect and it will come down to personal preference which brand you want.

I just got mine too, and noticed the same thing when comparing to JC's colour version. To my eye, I feel like the HX colour is more accurate to JC, but am curious how HX's KLM blue compares to NG.

On a trip to Schipol in the 90s, I did notice that some KLMs had slightly different hues of blue.

Still, what a bird by HX. Outstanding mould with unbelievable detail for 1/400!

I see you have the JC PH-BFG, that one should have come with an Aviationtag, so you could compare with the real thing if you'd like!

You are certainly correct that the KLM Blue is different from aircraft to aircraft, this is because it gets lighter over time - I presume due to the UV in sunlight.
This used to be especially visible with their old thick-blue cheatline livery they had from the 1980's to the early 2000's, but is not so much a thing anymore since the thin blue stripe livery that KLM 747 of yours is wearing - not that it didn't happen anymore - but it didn't get as bad as often as with the preceding livery. I feel that today's "droop snout" livery has even less issues with decolouration over time.

That is a very good idea, however I seem to have misplaced it in the move sadly.

Thank you for your corroboration, and the reminder of how the sun affects aircraft liveries over time. Probably why KLM has had many variations of their base blue livery.

Well, now I have another reason to get the HX KLM 744, when it rolls out. Which shant be long by their stride.
