On September 29, 2022 I had the opportunity to photograph and take videos of aircraft around the airport at Des Moines International Airport, DSM. A huge "Thank You" to the Des Moines Airport Operations for making these photos possible and for the opportunity to see more behind the daily operations!

Photos

1: Here at Gate A3B is an Allegiant A320S and the Gemini Jets version of almost the same aircraft! The model is N246NV and the real aircraft is N248NV.
2: UPS 767-300ERFW N312UP is parked at the cargo ramp. This image shows just how MASSIVE the 767 really is!
3: Me standing next to N225NE, the newest member of the Patriot's fleet of aircraft operated by Eastern Airlines.
4: Underneath the Patriot's 763. The aircraft sits so high an average adult can walk underneath the plane without hitting their head on the fuselage.
5: N896AT landing Runway 13 on the afternoon turn from Hotlanta as Delta 2371. This photo was taken on Runway 5 which is currently closed for maintenance.
6: N205NV departing Runway 13 as Allegiant 2055 bound for Santa-Ana. This photo was taken shortly after the aircraft had been repainted from being in a special livery promoting a then new movie.

How do I do this too?

Each airport has their own policies for ramp tours and some do not do them at all. However, it is possible to receive ramp photography privileges. It real y comes down to knowing the right people, being professional, being respectful to the property of the city and the airlines, following all safety proceeders, and following any station specific rules and regulations. Many airports might also want to run a background check before allowing you onto the ramp as well considering it is in the secure area. If you follow these simple rules you too might be allowed on to the ramp at your local airport for photography purposes.
