With the return of the Il-86 mould, today I start a mini look at the type with an avhistory piece on the development and service of the Soviet Union's first widebody. By Western standards the Il-86 was a serious failure but it provided safe and reliable high-capacity transport options for Aeroflot and later independent carriers into the 2000s.
