Boxes, Boxes Everywhere

Surely the only thing nerdier than talking about model aircraft is talking about the boxes they come in, but I'm not scared to go there! I have just completed a mammoth task of associating the models with the boxes their model boxes are in so thought I'd share my experience. How do you guys store your models?

Boxes are the bane of a big model collection, and owning over 3,400 models means storage is a problem. Fortunately, I got my loft boarded so can store the model boxes up there, but I realised recently that although my boxes were nicely stored, associatin

I store mine in plastic totes very similar to yours.

I have mine in their boxes in milk crates right now…hoping after my move to have a dedicated shelf for all the planes/boxes to sit. They fit okay but are a bit too tight for my liking. so don’t want to damage some boxes more than they already are. I work in home remodeling for my income so I may even build my own custom shelf’s specific to brand box dimensioned someday. (the dream goal)

I've thought about doing something like that in the loft, but there's no way I can justify the cost and time involved. Plus, when I had to move the entire collection from NZ to the UK it really helped to have plastic boxes for some of them. I've tried to move towards plastic box storage for the boxes for that reason.

Not the best pic but here are my boxes. Actually most of the model boxes are inside the lower storage box. The middle box only have a few boxes and the top box have some car parts instead

Currently I store my boxes on shelves. I have four that I’m currently using, though once I get my own place I’ll probably move towards storing them in totes and/or using closet space if I have any. My collection is a little more than a tenth of Richard’s size but rapidly growing.

For better or worse (lol) I don’t have the collection you do yet. I only just hit my 100th model a few days ago (yippie!). Once my collection grows bigger i’ll start keeping most of the USAir/Airways collection in a distinct location for display and most will probably make their way to plastic bins until needed for projects. I’m not going to my “forever home” yet so my dream project will likely wait until I know I will be stable for a good chunk of years. I enjoy woodworking thankfully so doing that will make me happy I hope. I haven’t read your article yet but I hope there are some good tips and ideas for those of us with big collections

First picture shows the AeroClassics boxes the second shows mostly NG boxes and a few other brands. Within the brands they are sorted by aircraft type.
