Are Tariffs Going to Kill 400 Scale?

I was thinking more someplace like Vietnam or India
The ostensible US argument for the tariffs is to boost local production and exports - ridiculous considering the US economy has always been consumerism-driven - and thus the maximising of corporate profits with companies moving manufacturing overseas.

The US has imposed 'retaliatory tariffs' on all countries - including the 2 you mention.

Most American shoes are made in Vietnam. Rich, influential Indians have interests in the US.
The leaderships of these 2 countries have already buckled to the bullying and presumably they'll reach some deal so Americans can continue to wear Nike and Adidas and relish Curry and Tikka, while brandishing Indian made Iphones.
But this is not a given, as the US wants to reduce trade deficits with each country - and considering that these 2 countries are poor and don't have the economic power to increase costly American imports, I'm curious to see as well how this pans out.

I was thinking about you when I decided what was to be made so that'd be a shame. Personally I haven't got anything against you, but I admit some of the things you've said here are a little concerning. It's upsetting how a lot of politics is based on creating a hatred towards others, often those who are the most vulnerable in society. That's not aimed at you personally, but it certainly touches on some of the topics you brought up.

On the tariffs topic Trump's actions just a few minutes ago illustrate the entire issue. Bribery and bullying behaviour towards other nations is just despicable. How can anyone trust the US ever again? This sort of statement 'Do not retaliate, and you will be rewarded' is horrible - like we are all beholden to America. Rewarded with 10% baseline tariffs and negotiations. We are so lucky. I think the rest of the world should tell the US to go do one personally.

Worse we are all at the by the minute whims of an idiot who thinks he's on a reality tv show.
For the record, I'm not a fan of some of Trump's policies... but I am opposed to the Democrats at every possible level. If you aren't going to hate me for holding to my beliefs and speaking my mind, I would be glad to buy your DC-9s. Are they going to be on a new mold?

I don’t think boosting local production and exports are entirely bad goals. After all, it was largely the industrial capacity of the US that won us WWII. The same goes for the allies in Europe; it was the US, as the “arsenal of democracy,” that kept the UK supplied with war materiel. The US only started becoming consumer-driven and service-oriented during the 1980s, and in retrospect, it might have not have been a good idea from a security point of view to deindustrialize as much as we did. I also think some amount of economic decoupling with China is not a bad thing. I work in the tech industry, and IP theft and forced tech transfer by China are serious problems for us, so I’m aware of the perils there.

That said, I think the entire premise of Trump’s trade policies - that trade deficits are bad in themselves - is just idiotic. I have a trade deficit in the hundreds of dollars with JetCollector, and I’m doing just fine. In general, I think it’s fine for us to import some things that aren’t security critical (like die-cast airplanes) from countries with lower labor costs. More immediately, I’d much rather we import from a place that has 10-30% tariffs than 125%+ tariffs.

After all, it was largely the industrial capacity of the US that won us WWII.
The World Order has changed - as also the entire economics (and politics) of manufacturing.

The US was able to do so during WWII due to a competitive void, and the protectionism / isolation of Germany, Russia and Japan (all manufacturing powerhouses in their own right at the time - with technology at par or surpassing that of the US)

If the US wants to pick up the pieces of its destroyed manufacturing heritage, it will need to start at the bottom end - to compete with the cheap manufacturing politics that its own corporate giants have historically facilitated - importing 'cheap' goods from poorer countries through exploitation of lax Labour laws, non-existent environmental controls, tax breaks and preferential treatments meted out, etc, such that manufacturing costs are kept at the minimum, to maximise corporate and management profits.
Now that is an insurmountable task. Unless of course, as the past few months foretell, the US goes the Bangladesh and Vietnam way - allowing child Labour and erasing Labour rights and toxic dumping - which in any case recent policies of dismantling hint towards?

But see what happened with Boeing - and there it wasn't even competing with China - and see how their machinists and Labour has been exploited while their management and CEOs line their pockets whilst risking the lives of passengers by forcing the production of low quality planes

Sorry but if saying "that to you personally something is a no go" is bordering hate speech than quite a big part of this forum is hate speech too.
Yeah, agreed. People writing off someone else's opinions/beliefs as "hate speech" and censoring them for years online is ultimately why a huge number of people voted for what is essentially the Joker. These aren't my personal beliefs, by the way - it's just a basic understanding of what's been going on...

When I was talking about WWII, I was referring to the US’s domestic manufacturing capacity, not necessarily how competitive it was with other countries in consumer markets. But, for reference [source], the US produced ~296,000 aircraft between 1939 and 1945, compared to ~134,000 by Germany, and ~65,000 by Japan. During the same period, the US built over 2000 large ships, compared to Japan’s 278, and Germany’s 38; 108000 tanks, compared to Germany’s 68,000 and Japan’s 4500; and 2.7 million machine guns, versus Germany’s 1 million, and Japan’s 380,000. Germany and Japan were manufacturing powerhouses, to be sure, but the US outclassed them both - as well as all of its allies - by orders of magnitude. If we’re talking technology, the US pioneered many things that the axis powers didn’t have; FM radio and synthetic rubber being just two examples.

But see what happened with Boeing - and there it wasn't even competing with China - and see how their machinists and Labour has been exploited while their management and CEOs line their pockets whilst risking the lives of passengers by forcing the production of low quality planes
If you’re talking about the 737 MAX crashes caused by the MCAS, I feel like that’s a result of poor design - probably due to pressures from management - rather than specific problems with manufacturing. If you’ve watched the John Oliver about Boeing, he talks about how the management at McDonnell-Douglas basically brought their toxic culture to Boeing, which had previously been renowned for the quality of its engineering.

It’s incredible how we’ve gone from discussing tariffs on model planes to….Hunter Biden….🤣
Because that is what MAGA does, instead of talking about this issue at hand, distract with BS.
What about that time Obama wore a tan suit.
What about when Obama saluted a Marine while holding a coffee cup.
Where is Obama's birth certificate?
Hillary's emails.
Hunter Biden.
When did Kamala "turn" black.
They are eating the cats and dogs!

But being a felon, starting an insurrection, suggesting we inject bleach as a cure for COVID and being a narcissistic liar is ok. But words and choice is a problem.
1) Biden was never prosecuted for the classified documents found in his garage because he was too senile, yet he was deemed to be cognitively fit for presidency. One can argue that the charges brought against Trump were political in nature. 2) There's a never-ending debate surrounding who was responsible for J6 with both sides pointing the finger. 3) Trump didn't make that remark as an official statement backed by the FDA. Consider the novelty of COVID-19 and treatments for it during its outbreak. Hydroxychloroquine was used at first to treat patients, which became more obsolete when research showed superiority of remdesivir. Trump's remark was mere speculation, not medical advice. If someone told you to break a leg, would you do it? Also consider that it was Trump who jumpstarted operation lightspeed to get COVID vaccines to people, which Democrats discredited and refused to take, citing political reasons, until Biden took over.

There's one party that immediately comes to mind that's easily offended by words and disagreeing opinions.

If we were already concerned about it switching to a political thread from our hobby being impacted by tariffs it certainly has become political now, yeesh. Some of you need to keep your opinions to yourself and certainly try to remain on topic here.

Like guys, I liek pleens, what about you?

All this whataboutery has led all of us to the dire situation all of us are in right now.
And of course, thus this thread here on MAF

And it's frustrating for those who could see this global chaos coming in.
But yeah, it is what it is.
And it's affecting us all.

1:400 will thus not be immune either.
And we don't even know yet to what extent this is going to affect the hobby.

Let's not loose track of the core matter being discussed
👍🏼🙏🏼
