I can't speak for other retailers that might have more leverage to get properly compensated. But in general, a broken model it's usually a loss, to some extent. Many manufacturers/distributors are great in offering replacement parts such as gears, antennas and even spare boxes. Unfortunately, that can't be said about all of them.

Yikes that's really unfortunate as you rely on the manufacturer to be dependable.

It's just how things are when you deal with a product that is not meant to be mass-produced. Nowadays, the collector has come to expect slot-in wings, antennas, flaps-down, etc It's like shipping home-built kits all around the world; they just don't travel well. Someone has to eat up the cost of broken models along the way.

There could be a market to sell spare parts... I'm surprised you don't see more for sale.
