Its engine is the improved D-30KP-2 engine with a maximum thrust of 12.5 tons. In the late 1990s, Russia began to develop an improved version of the Il-76TD. Due to the lower fuel consumption of the engine, the aircraft's range increased by 13%.
China has imported Il-76 many times, mainly a batch of new aircraft in the late 20th century and used aircraft from 2007 to 2014.
In 2005, China tried to jointly restart the Il-76 production line with Russia and Uzbekistan, but it fell through due to the global economic recession caused by the 2008 subprime crisis.
