Just received the two SPK and SPL versions from the Apollo brand. As you all know there are many brands doing this Tropical scheme but the details, quality and mint mint box factor vary a lot
Last time I did a review on the JC’s vs HX’s flaps version. Since the NG’s version isn’t out can’t do comparison with this.
Let’s start off with the packaging:
Material quality/mint mint box factor: ★☆☆☆☆
Box’s paper material is very cheap like Phoenix, Gemini or others soft and flimsy and nowhere near HX or YY’s sturdiness and high printing quality. Mint mint box factor is poor as it’s too easy to crease. But despite the fact that these are low-cost models can’t expect too much to deliver the best.
Printing/glossiness/detailness/imprint quality: ★★★☆☆
The quality is acceptable but not the best like others. Surprisingly they come with antennas and are quite detail oriented. The paint is okay or so-so throughout the model and no dull faded looking spots like some other more costly brands when it comes to complex imprint/livery.
Mould/accuracy/landing gear: ★★☆☆☆
First thing noticed was the ugly wing-joint (root) design. Not sure if this one comes from an ancient casting but it looks bad. It just has the bottom fuselage orange painted with a shape to mimic the root design. Landing gear is so-so looks old style not as detailed as others but for the cost can’t expect much.
The conclusion: These are affordable models to have for something that’s colorful and complex, but the ugliness of the root shows its weakness of the tooling. Whether it’s worthy to add these two to your collection is your decision as there are many different brands producing this Tropical scheme and with much better quality, mould or details.
