1:400 Brookings International Airport (BIA)

After hearing Leo’s cries for more content in the Model Airports section, I figured I would share a creation of mine.

This is Brookings International Airport, a fictional 1:400 model airport based in the small college town of Brookings, South Dakota, which is an hour north of Sioux Falls. This airport was built to meet increasing travel needs for Brookings locals and college students who didn’t want to make the trek south or to Minneapolis and currently features five hard stands. Passengers board via air stairs, but there are plans to install jet bridges to keep travelers out of the harsh winter conditions that are a mainstay here.

Services include Delta Connection to Minneapolis (though it has quietly been off the schedule lately), United Express to Denver and Chicago, and Allegiant Air to St. Petersburg, FL, and a new service to Las Vegas just launched this month.

Here’s an overview of BIA. I put this on top of a dresser so the space is limited here 😅

A closer look at the passenger gates. They’re all separate hard stands but I will eventually install jet bridges so that passengers aren’t exposed to the harsh cold that’s coming soon.

BIA also has a pretty healthy GA area. Plenty of bizjets come to town plus there are a plethora of Cessna 172s for the local college’s flight school, which are a frequent sight/

Long term I plan on keeping this project going, but how I envision it is a little muddy right now. So we’ll hang on to the small setup for now!

Love that SjyCourier! Can you take a few pictures of it?

As someone who primarily makes fictional airports, I’m glad to see another fictional airport from you JJ, it’s been a LONG time since Skippytown ended. I could definitely envision this airport growing over time, with routes to a variety of fictional and real airports. Also, if you are pressed for space, I recommend just covering a different display with BIA’s base, giving you more room. I do this with most my updates, covering up Seattle-North, It gives me so many more options for changing layouts or expanding.

Currently this airport exists in my dorm so space is constrained by that right now 😅 once I bring this setup home it won’t be as bad. I do want to make this a large international airport in the long run.

Is it annoying to carry all the models and GSE all the way to your dorm to make the updates?

I know I already commented this on the update, but it would be awesome to see Sun Country hop on an MSP service. Maybe even Delta would throw a 717 or A220 on for competition? I dunno, thought it could be pretty cool.
