I received my Swissair Boeing 747-357 HB-IGF today. Except for the colour of the elevators, which are indeed silverish, this is an outstanding model and I think one of the best classic 747s I've ever seen in 1/400. The Aviation 400 and JC Wings versions of the Swissair 747-300 pale in...
What a nice walk down memory lane. (y) Among my first airplane models ever were a Schabak Boeing 747 Swissair and a Royal Jordanian 747. I even had some Schuco models before that (Condor 707 and Lufthansa DC-10).
My first 1/400 model was this British Airways 747-400 by Gemini Jets. I bought it...
I am not yet convinced that all Swissair 747s had the grey area in front of the wings at all times. But it doesn't matter because at least HB-IGF seems to be mostly spot on (despite the elevators). When I went through some of my 747 books und photos I found that newly delivered QANTAS jumbo...
I vaguely remember there was a difference between the PAX and the COMBI versions with regard to livery details or between the US registered and the European ones. In this photo HB-IGE does not appear to have any grey in front of the wings although it's the late 90s...
As far as I know N221GF had a bare metal belly after delivery: https://www.planepictures.net/v3/show_en.php?id=569728
But Swissair did have a habit of repainting aircraft.
I am not sure of this is just a reflection or some grey behind the nose gear: https://www.jetphotos.com/photo/11046098
On the DC-10 it was bare metal, on the 747 dark grey indeed. Swissair's 747s went through several repaints, sometimes in a rather short time. The h-stabs later went all white. There is a nice picture of HB-IGD on Facebook that shows the darker grey on the elevators as opposed to the lighter one...
I think they tried to replicate the bare metal elevators Swissair had on a range of aircaft including the DC-10 and the 747-300. This appears to have been a temporary thing such as the grey belly on the chocolate livery:

IMHO the nose looks better than all the competition (which isn't that hard). The nose down attitude needs refinement though.
However, the expectations that some collectors have are way unrealistic. This is 1/400 and still many models look as good as their 1/200 counterparts for thrice the price.
Precisely! After masking it off I would first start with the soft rubber so that fewer acetone is needed, which sometimes tends to affect masked off areas.
What I don't understand is that the so called bread and butter releases are not permanently available through regular re-releases for example. Okay, one exception comes to mind: GJ do this with their Emirates releases. :ROFLMAO:
